Highlights

Lovie Smith, from the small Texas town of Big Sandy, was hired by general manger Jerry Angelo to succeed Dick Jauron as Bears head coach in 2004. Smith got his first team off to a respectable 3-5 start but saw the year unravel amid a blizzard of problems at quarterback and finished 2-6 over the second half of the season. When Rex Grossman was injured in the 2005 preseason, Smith went to rookie Kyle Orton and reached the playoffs with a surprise 11-5 record. He topped that with a 13-3 season in 2006 and finished with a loss to the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLI in Miami. A former linebacker and safety at Tulsa in the late 1970's, Smith broke into coaching tutoring linebackers at his alma mater and developed into one of the game's most respected defensive coaches, reaching the pro ranks in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming defensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the St. Louis Rams, and taking over as the Bears' top man, where he continued to focus on building elite defenses built around speed and a simplified, attacking philosophy. Smith signed a long-term contract extension after the Super Bowl.

Cutler sees what Lovie misses
Jay Cutler apparently is fed up with being run down. And thrown down. And beaten down and beaten up. And if the Bears quarterback had to pants his head coach to make things better, then fine, Cutler will offer cold-eyed honesty that ought to embarrass...

Fate hasn't smiled on Chicago sports teams
Beware, Cubs and White Sox. If a disturbing trend continues, you're headed for trouble. Heads up, Paul Konerko and Jake Peavy. You too Starlin Castro. Devastating injuries to a trio of star athletes over the last six months have wreaked havoc on their...

QB Blanchard among 7 players signed by Bears
The Bears liked what they saw in their draft picks, saw glimpses from their undrafted free agents and were intrigued enough by some tryout players to offer contracts. The club announced that seven of the 34 players who were in rookie minicamp over the...

Bears rookies to get real wake-up call at first minicamp
You're not on scholarship anymore. That's the advice I would give to Shea McClellin, Alshon Jeffery, Brandon Hardin and the rest of the Bears draft class. No more draft hype, high-fives or news conferences. Those days are gone. You're just a rookie now....

Time to bring Tommie Harris back
It was time when the Bears cut ties with Tommie Harris in February 2011. Now, in May 2012, it could be time to bring Harris back. Confused? When the Bears cut Harris, he was the starting defensive tackle, the onetime centerpiece of the defense who...

Reader Q&A: Dan Pompei's Bears mailbag
In your opinion, is this the most talented post-Super Bowl 41 Bears roster? -- Chris Jensen, from Twitter Yes, it is. I thought the previous most-talented Bears roster post-2006 was the roster from last year. And the 2012 roster is better still,...

McClellin signs 4-year deal, gets right to work
For those still not sure exactly how the Bears will deploy Shea McClellin, Friday's first rookie minicamp practice offered a good preview. The first-round pick was in a three-point stance every snap. "I don't think you saw him pass-dropping or...
