Jimmy Johnson

Jimmy Johnson is one of two football coaches to win the national championship in college and the Super Bowl championship in the NFL. Johnson won back-to-back national championships coaching the University of Miami Hurricanes in 1987 and 1988, and he did the same thing with the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XVII and Super Bowl XVIII. Barry Switzer did it with Oklahoma (1974, 1975 and 1985) and the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. Barry Switzer did it with Oklahoma (1974, 1975 and 1985) and the Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX. The 64-year-old Johnson also coached the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs in three consecutive years (1997-1999). His record as a college coach at Oklahoma State University and University of Miami, covering 10 seasons, was 82-34-2 (.695). In nine National Football League seasons, he was 170-101-2 (.626). When Johnson left the Dallas Cowboys following the 1993 season, he joined FOX Sports and HBO Sports as an analyst. He worked with FOX until he joined the Miami Dolphins. Johnson left the Miami Dolphins following the 1999 season and returned to FOX Sports. He currently works on the network's Emmy-winning NFL pre-game show and is a studio analyst for the network's coverage of the Bowl Championship Series. James William Johnson was born in Port Arthur, Texas on July 16, 1943. He earned all-state honors as a two-way lineman for Jefferson High School. He became an All-Southwest Conference defensive lineman at the University of Arkansas and played on the Razorbacks 1964 national championship team. Johnson was a three-year letterman and named to the school's All-Decade Team of the 1960s. He earned a degree in psychology. Johnson married Linda Kay Cooper in 1963, and they had two sons, Brent and Chad. They were divorced in 1989. Johnson married Rhonda Rookmaker in 1999, and they live in Islamorada, Fla. where he enjoys fishing. Occasionally, he gives his time to a fund-raising event in the Florida Keys. After 14 years as an assistant at six different schools, Johnson coached Oklahoma State from 1979-1983 going 29-24-2 (.545). The team played in the 1982 Independence Bowl (Texas A&M 33, Ohio State University16) and 1984 Bluebonnet Bowl (OSU 24, Baylor 14). In 1984, the University of Miami hired Johnson to replace Howard Schnellenberger who left the Hurricanes after winning the school's first national championship in 1983. In five seasons under Johnson, the Hurricanes were 21-9 against teams ranked in the Top 20 and 31-0 against unranked teams. They won 36 straight regular-season games (1985-1988) and 20 road games in a row (1984-88). Johnson had 14 players drafted in the first round, and Testaverde won the 1988 Heisman Trophy. Johnson went to Dallas coach the Dallas Cowboys in 1989 joining Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones, a former roommate at Arkansas. After finishing 1-15 in 1989, Johnson, the coach, and Jones, the owner, began rebuilding the Cowboys. On Oct. 12, 1989, Dallas traded Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings in a deal that would eventually involve 18 players, a NFL record. Johnson's ability to evaluate talent led to consecutive Super Bowl wins. Dallas made it two in a row in 1993, going 12-4 and beating Buffalo 30-13 on Jan. 30, 1994 in Super Bowl XXVIII as MVP Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards (30 carries) and two touchdowns. With the Jones relationship souring, Johnson left the team on March 29, 1994. After two years in television, Johnson became the Miami Dolphins' third coach in 1996. He turned one of the league's oldest teams into one with 22 starters averaging 25.7 years old, the youngest team. On Jan. 16, 2000, Johnson retired and headed back to television. In 1993, he wrote Turning the Thing Around: My Life in Football, a book ghost-written with Ed Hinton, but he was unable to return Miami to the Super Bowl, a place it hasn't been since 1984. Jimmy Johnson's failure to win a championship with the Dolphins does little, if anything, to change his legacy as a coach who did it four times, two times each with Hurricanes and Cowboys.  « Show less

  1. Saints RB Reggie Bush

"If anyone thinks we didn"t earn this win today, they weren"t watching the same we were.  This was one of the toughest games I think I"ve played in and I"m not saying that just because we won and we"re going to the Super Bowl.  This was such an up-and-down game, a roller coaster game.  It seemed like no calls were going our way 99 percent of the time and finally toward the end we had some calls go our way.  It seemed like they had eight fumbles and got seven of them back.  It was just one of those games where you don"t ever give up because you don"t know what is going to happen.
