  3. Real 'fixer' behind 'Scandal' steps into spotlight

When actress Kerry Washington was preparing for her role as Olivia Pope, the high-octane Beltway "fixer" on the new ABC series "Scandal," one of the first things she did was launch a Google search for Judy Smith, the real-life crisis consultant on whose professional life the series is based. Washington was somewhat perplexed by how little came up on the D.C. insider who had navigated through some of the thorniest public relations challenges of the past 20 years on behalf of her clients, including Monica Lewinsky, former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig and NFL quarterback Michael Vick, to name a few. There were no interviews and rarely even media mention of the public relations powerhouse.

  10. Open thread: Whipsawed by Weiner

    Change of Subject
I was skeptical -- overly skeptical, as it turned out -- of the informal allegations against U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner when they first came out. Linked to a Daily Kos analysis that purported to show why the fact patterns showed......

  12. Weiner May Step Down "In A Couple Of Days": Democrats

Before the week is out, Rep. Anthony Weiner could resign. That's what some Democrats on Capitol Hill are saying now. But what Congressman Weiner will say, now that he has a chance to meet with his wife for the first time in over a week, will determine whether or not he steps down.

  14. Why does Anthony Weiner have to resign when other sleazy politicians stay?

What New York Rep. Anthony Weiner did was disgusting and weird, and his direct lies and attempts to cover it up were inexcusable. But the news that he plans to resign after pressure from fellow Democrats (including, somewhat indirectly, President Barack Obama) raises extremely thorny questions about what the standards are, exactly, for drumming politicians out of office after a sex scandal. Mr. Weiner is out because he talked about sex and sent lewd photographs on Twitter and lied about it in a press conference. More than a decade ago, President Bill Clinton had actual sexual contact with an intern and lied about it under oath (though his evasive language allowed him to cling to a laughable claim of truth). Democrats did not force him out of office and, in fact, rejected House Republicans’ charges of impeachment.

  18. Weiner was worse than Larry Craig

On June 18, the Baltimore Sun's editorial came out in defense of Anthony Weiner ("Why did Weiner have to resign?"). The item claimed that what Sen. Larry Craig, did was much worse. Really? Sticking your foot inside another person's bathroom stall is...

  20. Sen. John Ensign had said resigning 'would be admitting guilt'

    Top of the Ticket
Just recently, Republican Sen. John Ensign had this to say about an ethics investigation and the possibility that he would resign: “If I was concerned about that, I would resign. That would make the most sense, because then it goes......

  22. Krystal Ball photos are wrong, but not sexist

There are plenty of nice online photos of Virginia congressional candidate Krystal Ball — portraits of a serious young woman in a dark suit, sweet shots of a young mother with her baby girl.
