  15. Second Case Of West Nile Virus In A Human Confirmed In Covington

    <article_body>
A West Nile Virus case has been confirmed in a human in Covington by Dr. Raoult Ratard with the Department of Health and Human Services.
Ratard tells ABC26 News that this second case was diagnosed in the last few days, and that the other one, also in Covington was diagnosed about a week ago.
West Nile Virus cases become active in mid-July and continue into November and even December, said Ratard. In 2008, Louisiana saw close to 30 cases, he said. Ratard expects the same for 2009. Over 100 cases were diagnosed in 2002, he said.
Ratard has three tips for the public to avoid catching the virus:
Mosquito-proof the house -- put screens on doors and windows
Don't breed mosquitos -- don't keep standing water in fountains or pools
Keep covered -- wear protective clothing or repellent</article_body>
