  9. Louisiana Expected To Create New H.s. Diploma

    <article_body>
Rejecting the advice of national education advocates, Louisiana lawmakers are expected to approve creation of a new public school curriculum with lower standards required to advance to high school. The bill has met little opposition from legislators, who embrace the idea that the new curriculum and diploma will increase the percentage of students who graduate. But education advocates insist the change will produce high school graduates incapable of reading, writing or doing basic math. Under the plan, certain eighth graders would face lower standards for passing into the ninth grade.
 The proposal is expected to win final approval from the Legislature in the next few days. It would then go to Gov. Bobby
Jindal, who has said he supports it.</article_body>
