New Orleans prep legend Altobello dead at age 89

Never had a losing season in 25 years

New Orleans—

New Orleans prep coaching legend Johnny Altobello died last night at the age of 89.

Altobello won 12 state championships, 8 in basketball and 4 in baseball, at De la Salle and St Aloysius high schools.

He won 16 basketball district titles and 7 district titles in baseball. In baseball, Altobello won 629 games. In basketball, Altobello won 589 games and lost only 92.

Altobello never had a losing season as a coach. This past season, his granddaughter, Michelle Bordes, played on the Chapelle high school team that won the girls state 5A basketball crown.

Altobello's wake will be Thursday night at Lakelawn funeral home. Burial services are Friday.
