There's a new krewe in town and they're environmentally friendly. The Krewe of Kolossos is in their inaugural season this Mardi Gras. One thing that makes them so unique is they use trash, and other salvaged materials to build all their props. This way they are saving money and also making Mardi Gras more sustainable.
Instead of floats, the 100-member Krewe rides different bikes all designed by artists in the Krewe.
"Kolossos is a concept that I've worked on to connect the artists with the super Krewes," Founder of the Krewe of Kolossos, Karina Nathan said.
The Krewe of Kolossos will be featured in many of the parades throughout this Mardi Gras.
Besides being environmentally conscious, this Krewe aims to bring more entertainment beyond just beads.
"It's about the show and not the throw. If you entertain people then you don't have to throw beads," Nathan said.
The Krewe consists of a variety of members. Some costume makers, fire dancers, film makers, circus performers, and other creative artists living in New Orleans.
Being a "green" krewe is extremely important for members.
"I can't imagine being more proud of anything than making Carnival 'green' in a way that I think this Krewe can," Nathan said.
