If you ordered Girls Scout cookies recently on the North Shore you may not be getting your cookies anytime soon, if at all. A Girl Scout troop in St. Tammany has been dissolved strictly because of politics.
Apparently, some over zealous parents felt the Girl Scouts have lost their way. A Girl Scout troop in Colorado has let a transgender child into their group. As far as the Girl Scouts are concerned, it's the first time ever in their 100 year history that this has happened.
So appalled by this, a couple of mothers from a St. Tammany Parish Girl Scout troop called the state office to find out if Louisiana's girl scouts were approached with the same dilemma how would they handle it. Not surprising, the Louisiana Girl Scout organization didn't have an immediate answer to this intriguing question.
That did not sit well with the St. Tammany folks. They pulled their girls out of the Scouts and dissolved the chapter. Try explaining that to little girls that loved the Girl Scouts.
Ironically, the short-sighted state organization sided with the short sighted St. Tammany parents and now don't allow transgender girls into the Louisiana Girls Scouts.
The gesture was "too little too late" for these parents. They had already made their decision. The Girl Scouts are taboo, one mother told me. A political organization that supports abortion and planned parenthood. Really?!? The Girl Scouts?!?
I thought the Girl Scouts of America's aim was to empower girls and to help teach values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, character, sisterhood, confidence, and citizenship through activities including camping, community service, learning first aid, and earning badges by acquiring other practical skills. Didn't realize it was a political organization.
Hey North Shore folks, better dissolve the Boy Scouts, too. Who knows, in Idaho they may let in a gay kid and Lord knows we can't have that.
