New Orleans -
In a few short months, Mayor elect Mitch Landrieu will pick a new police chief. It's a big task, one that will not only shake up the NOPD, but could also change the way residents look at the department.
This week, the feds dropped a bombshell, a former NOPD Lieutenant pled guilty to covering up the shootings on the Danziger Bridge. The revelation only hurt the allegedly battered image that most people have of the NOPD. Resident Danielle Winley says, "I don't trust them at all, most of them are snakes."
So how can that image be prepared? Rafael Goyeneche, president of the Metropolitan Crime Commission says Mitch Landrieu has to pick a new police chief from outside the city to come in and clean out the corruption. "He's going to have to make sure that he begins to convince the public that there is a new attitude and a new spirit" Goyeneche says.
But not all residents agreeĀ .in fact, most have mixed feelings about who should take over as the city's next top cop. Darryl Cushenberry comments, "I think they should get one from within the city because he would know the city better." While Tim Singer adds, "I gather it should probably be somebody outside. I think that a lot of New Orleanians have benefitted from some outside perspectives at this point and for example that has happened with the schools."
Goyeneche says whoever Landrieu picks, it's critical that they make some big decisions once they over. "The next police chief I think will reorganize the public integrity division, review anyone that the federal authorities did not charge with a crime and administratively make some decisions about what the future of those individuals will be" Goyeneche says.
