Chief Charles Long, who joined the department this past year, said bee attacks were a concern at his former post in Bonita Springs, Fla., and they are a rising concern in Louisiana since aggressive African honey bees have been found at eight sites since 2005.

The African variety is more aggressive than the more common European bee.

No attacks of the African bee have been reported in the state, said Allen Fabre of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry. But the likelihood the bees could spread to more parishes exists.

Chief Long says the bee-proof suits cost the department $110 each.
