NEW ORLEANS, La. -
A 47-year-old New Orleans woman has admitted filing a fraudulent claim for disaster help after Hurricane Katrina.
Karen Turner pleaded guilty Thursday before U.S. District Judge Martin L.C. Feldman to one count of theft of government funds.
U.S. Attorney Jim Letten says Turner admitted filing the fraudulent claim with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, saying that her vehicle was destroyed by the 2005 storm. Based on that information, Letten says FEMA reimbursed Turner more than $4,200 for which she was not entitled.
Turner faces up to 10 years in jail and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for March 11.
