KILLONA, La. -
Former Destrehan High School band teacher Byron Toups reported to Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona Monday to begin serving his one-year sentence.
The 40-year-old Toups of Des Allemands pleaded guilty last month to malfeasance, intimidation of a witness and simple battery in connection with committing indecent behavior with a 16-year-old female student and trying to kiss a 17-year-old student, then telling her not to tell anyone about it.
Toups was arrested in March 2008 and resigned from the St. Charles Parish school system in January.
As part of his sentence by state District Judge Lauren Lemmon, Toups cannot work as a teacher or tutor for any student younger than 19 for five years.
