THIBODAUX, La—
Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre has been cleared of ethics charges stemming from his sale of devices designed to keep drunken drivers off the road.A ruling Tuesday by a three-judge panel says the state Ethics Board failed to prove Webre improperly used his position to generate money for his business, Smart Start of Louisiana.
The company sells ignition anti-lock devices that measure a user's blood-alcohol content before they can start their vehicle.
The judges overturned a 2002 opinion by the Ethics Board that said Webre couldn't sell the anti-lock devices to Lafourche Parish residents.
