Family and friends of Mike Ainsworth went to Pier 90 Marina in Luling to show support and give donations to help bury him. He was gunned down earlier this week trying to prevent a carjacking in Algiers Point.

There were donation cans at the bar, and people dropped in cash and met with the family. Ainsworth's mother Yvonne clutched a police medallion, proud of her son. Harry "Mike" Ainsworth was a volunteer with COPS 8 in the French Quarter, showing support for the Eighth District Police Department.

"He gave his personal time, not only to the police department but police officers that had damaged homes. He volunteered his personal time to rebuild homes that had been damaged in the storm. He loved people, but he really loved the police department," his mother said.

Mike's brother was also at the fundraiser. Bill Ainsworth says he looked up to his big brother, and also volunteered wtih him. He's not at all surprised at how Mike lost his life.

"It's not the first time he'd gotten involved. We've helped out many many times and stopped incidents from happening; jumped into middle of incidents, squash it until police show up. It's just how we are," Bill Ainsworth said,"I guess it was just his time. God was ready for him."

His family hopes his death will prompt people to speak up, and take back the city as the murder count continues to rise this year.

"Too many people turn their back, and 'I didn't see anything'. As long as people refuse to see anything, people like this man are going to keep getting away with it," Yvonne Ainsworth said.

No arrest has been made.

A memorial service is being held this Friday at St. Louis Cathedral. Visitation is from 9-11am. The service is at 11.

Anyone who would like to donate to the Ainsworth Family can go to any Whitney Bank Branch. There is a "Harry Michael Ainsworth Benefit" Account.
