HOLLYGROVE - Hollygrove has been a targeted focus of the United States Marshals Service. It's investing time with children.

Children broke bread with grown ups bearing a badge. They are part of U.S.Marshals camp and Deputy U.S. Marshal Garrett hawk was surprised by the images these children have of law enforcement.

"Why we pick on people with braids? Why we pick on a certain group of people? Black, young black kids with pants down, why do we pick on them?" he said they asked.

That is exactly why they hold the camp: expose the children to another perspective and build bonds with them at such an early age. They also brought in guests from the criminal justice arena, including Federal Judge Ginger Berrigan.

"They're so full of enthusiasm, and energy and hope and optimism, and I just want to see them flourish. I don't want to see them ten years from now on a street corner, looking drugged out or I don't want to see them in my court in shackles," Judge Berrigan said.

Of course the children had a lot of fun at this camp, but they also learned about law enforcement, crime prevention and being good citizens.

"I want to clean up trash that's on the ground and so it can't get dirty, and I want to help animals, and make a difference," said 6 year old Anyah Dejan.

And while 11 year old Chanel Atkins enjoys the crafts, she says she appreciates the Marshals service arresting criminals.

"I think it's good they're getting them out so the children could go outside whenever they want to and they don't have nothing to worry about," Atkins said.

That is what all these children want, a safe environment to play, and just be kids for now.

The Marshals service plans to continue holding its camp in Hollygrove every summer. This is its second year.
