PLAQUEMINES PARISH—
Since BP's well began to leak, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's office estimates that the population of Venice has doubled. Most of the new faces are men working in the oil cleanup effort. Most of them are causing no problems. But with the spike in population comes a jump in crime
"Fights, narcotics charges like marijuana. Different little things like that. Nothing really serious at this point yet," said Col Charles Guey of the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office.
Deputies are concerned serious drug dealing and prostitution could move in to Venice. So to help handle the crowd, the sheriff's office brought in a portable jail complete with scary jail toilet and scary jail shower. The portable jail can house up to ten prisoners at a time. BP is paying the rental fee.
The ability to keep multiple suspects locked up allows more deputies to stay on patrol in Venice.
"Normally to transport a prisoner from Venice to Belle Chasse, it ties up one of my deputies, for just one prisoner, for up to four hours, pretty much half their shift," Guey said.
