From Tiger Woods to David Duchovny, just about every month a new celebrity is rumored to be suffering from a sex addiction, but this taboo topic doesn't just impact the rich and famous. Up to 8% of U.S. adults are addicted to sex. Like gambling or alcohol, sex addiction controls and destroys lives.
Their lives were spinning out of control, but we're not talking about drugs.
Author of "Love Junkie," Rachael Resnick, describes it as "A rush." Sex addict, "Carol," says, "I just needed more and more and more."
These women were addicted to sex.
"Carol" says, "I wanted a lot of attention, a lot of male attention at pretty much any cost."
Psychologists say more than 18 million adults in the U.S. have a sex addiction. As many as 25% of addicts are women. "Carol" won't identify herself, but she will share her story.
"As soon as i got married, I remember thinking, you're the only person I get to have sex with forever!"
She slept with more than 10 different men and had four longer affairs during her 7 year marriage. She spent hours everyday online and on the phone. Sex became her air. She needed it to survive.
Sex therapist, Alex Caroline Robboy, says, "They tend to be very highly driven, very focused, incredible attention spans and they get sucked into this world where they can't let go. It's like compulsiveness."
Resnick once sent 64 emails to a man in 48 hours, and while incessantly texting another lover she crashed into a family's minivan. One of her angry former lovers even broke into her home and trashed it.
Resnick says, "I simply thought that I was extra passionate. I was more passionate than other people and I was just unlucky in love and I did not think there was anything wrong with me for decades."
Both women found help in 12 step rehab programs. Rachel committed to two years of celibacy. "Carol" continues intense counseling.
"Carol" says, "It's not the first thing I think of anymore. Thank God."
"This is not about being prudish or retreating from my life," says Resnick, "My interest is in having better sex and more intimacy and relationships."
Their ultimate goal: leaving their obsessive lifestyles behind and looking forward to a future filled with meaningful love.
National surveys reveal most sex addicts have a dual addiction. 42% have a drug problem, 38% have eating disorders, and 26% are compulsive spenders.

It's not hard to believe that so many people have a problem with sex addiction -- it's everywhere! Especially here in New Orleans!
