NEW ORLEANS—
Tight-gripping cuffs are the reason this 1st grader could miss the rest of the school year. Six-year-old Ja'Briel Weston's parents are keeping him home after security guards at his school, Sarah T. Reed, handcuffed him twice last week when he acted unruly. No calls were made from the school to the boy's home. Mom and dad had to find out from Ja'Briel himself who complained of a sore wrist last Thursday.
Recovery School District security head Eddie Compass said earlier today, "we do not condone the handcuffing of our children by any stretch of the imagination".
The school district wasn't ever told about Ja'Briel being cuffed, and Compass says that's a no no. The investigation should wrap up by next Tuesday if not sooner.
Compass couldn't say whether the school principal, teachers and security guards could all take the fall if deemed responsible. For those who are, "they will be punished severely, including dismissal," Compass said.
