NEW ORLEANS—
Ground breaking is set for Saturday on a golf
course considered an anchor of efforts to bring back two New
Orleans' neighborhoods. The sprawling, 18-hole course sustained wind and saltwater damage in Hurricane Katrina. Its overhaul, set to begin nearly four years after Katrina, is considered a critical piece in efforts to bring back Gentilly Woods and Pontchartrain Park.
The New Orleans Redevelopment Authority made the area, known as "Pontilly," an initial focus of efforts to bring back housing and entire communities. Street improvements, sports stadium work and a senior center are among the other local projects planned or under way.
The city estimates the cost of the golf course restoration and improvements at $9.8 million. The completion date for the project in next July.
