NEW ORLEANS—
The community arguably that received the most damage following Katrina is up in arms over what it considers a lack of recovery dollars to the Ninth Ward. Community leaders claim if not for volunteers and non-profit groups the ninth ward would truly be a ghost town.Vanessa Gueringer, who is with community voice, said monies have been allocated to revitalize a park and rebuild the community center, but they're still waiting to break ground.
Gueringer said other communities not impacted as much have rebounded. She wonders if this slow pace is a sign that there's a move to shrink the foot print of the city.
City spokesperson, Ceeon Quiett, said that's not the case. She blames the delay on the federal and state governments.
Quiett said so far $50 million has been allocated to the lower nine. Those monies are in use now for facilities and street repairs. She said the city is still awaiting approval from the feds for more funding for the lower nine.
