Loyola Students May Soon Minor in New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS - What is New Orleans? For Colleen Halley New Orleans is everything. "People are really fascinated with the culture down here." She just moved here from Pittsburgh, and is learning about the city. Soon, she'll be able to learn even more.

"I think it's the most fascinating city in the United States." Leslie Parr is the Director of Loyola's Center for the Study of New Orleans, a new research center focusing on New Orleans. Linda says Loyola faculty is putting together a minor in New Orleans, making it the first university nationwide to offer a minor on a city.

"I can't imagine any other city that would have as much to study," says Colleen.

From our food to our history to our music, Parr says the minor will explore every aspect of the city, even things not so positive. "Poverty, housing problems, race relations, politics," she says. The goal is to give students like Jared Brooks an in-depth knowledge of New Orleans and allow them to tell the city's story. "I think the country needs to see more of that. It's a very alive city. The hospitality is mind-blowing. The food is great. There's always something to do. There's never a boring night," he says.

Jared and Colleen can't wait to enroll. "This is a really fascinating place," she says. Their hope: take their newfound knowledge and make a difference in the continued renewal of the city.
