Colleen Smith says, "Sheri Stephens a mother in Ponchatoula had a son in Afghanistan and he told his mom no one else was getting care packages so she did something about it."

This year's mission is its biggest yet. Tricia Randazzo-Zornes says "this year they have a goal of sending 1,000 king cakes out to the troops."

1,000 red white and blue cakes to deliver to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Smith says, "if we can just send them a little bit of taste of home it really boosts their moral."

It's major effort that comes with a big price. "We have to raise over $15,000 for the postage and the cakes," she says.

Randazzo's is donating 500 cakes to the cause. But Operation We Care still needs all the help it can get. It's working to get everything ready to go by the first week of February.

Right now the non-profit has collected $3,000 towards its goal.
