ALEXANDRIA, VA. -
The trial of a former Louisiana
congressman accused of taking bribes and other crimes has been
delayed another week at the request of defense lawyers.
Democrat William Jefferson represented parts of New Orleans until he lost his re-election bid last year. He is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for brokering business deals in Africa.
Defense lawyers said Wednesday they needed more time to find an expert who could back up Jefferson's legal theories on the duties of a congressman.
Prosecutors opposed the delay, but U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III agreed to push the start back to June 9.
