NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Four New Orleans firefighters were injured
Saturday night while battling a blaze in Algiers and investigators
are trying to determine what caused the fire.Five people escaped the flames before they spread to a total of four buildings on Slidell Street near the corner of Verret Street. Officials say one firefighter suffered second-degree burns to his neck, two were treated for heat exhaustion and another needed oxygen.
The names of the injured firefighters were not released.
The blaze was reported at 10:43 p.m. and firefighter Michael Williams says two unoccupied buildings were already on fire.
It took 70 firefighters until 12:07 a.m. to get the fire under control.
