NEW ORLEANS -
New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin says the city inspector general's office has gotten "overly political" and its work is shoddy.
Nagin told WBOK radio he supports the inspector general concept but isn't a fan of how the office is being run.
The City Council created the office, hoping in part to instill greater public confidence in New Orleans' ability to properly spend funds after Hurricane Katrina. But it took time for the office to get established and get basics like a computer system, phones and adequate staffing.
The first inspector general resigned last January, citing health reasons. In the months following, infighting marred the office. A new IG, Ed Quatrevaux, took over this fall.
Quatrevaux defended his office's work and said he looks forward to meeting with Nagin.
