Both lanes on I-10 are now open after an early morning crash in New Orleans East killed two men and injured several others. 60 people were involved in the Thursday morning pile up.
The massive incident involved 40 cars and 22 people were taken to the hospital for various injuries. 37 people refused medical attention. The eastbound lanes were cleared several hours after the incident. The westbound lanes were later opened around 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening.
A 54-year old man from Springfield, LA is one of the victims killed in the crash. The other victim is an adult male from Slidell, LA. His age is still unknown at this time. The names of the crash victims are being withheld until all family is notified.
According to New Orleans police spokesperson Gary Flott, the crash happened near the Michoud Boulevard exit around 4 a.m. Thursday morning.
Flott said one firefighter was also injured and treated for lacerations to the face.
As a result, the I-10 was shut down in both directions for a half mile until the towing crews cleared the scene. Many of the drivers involved in the crash told police that heavy fog and smoke were in the air at the time of the crash. The incident is still under police investigation.
