This Sunday 11-year-old Alex Tabor has a new pet. He's taking home a kitten he's named "Stitch." It's the first time Alex has adopted a pet, but his friend Corrie Amici has done it 10 times.

The two are able to take home "Stitch" because, for the first time, the St Tammany Parish Humane Society is open on Sundays.

Employee Daniel Goodwin says, "We've only been open for about an hour, and I've already had three people come by."

From dogs to cats, they take in all furry four legged friends, but they do pay special attention to certain breeds like Chows and Pit Bulls that are known to be a bit more aggressive. They say with the recent attacks they are more careful these breeds end up with the right owner.

"If a man comes in and says 'I want a Pit Bull, and I want this one because he's aggressive,' things like that we really have to be careful about."

The humane society added Sunday to their schedule because they say the demand is there. They say most animals they carry come from families who can no longer care for them, and a few are strays.

As for "Stitch," he may not be thrilled about being boxed up on his ride, but Alex says he knows his attitude will change once the two arrive home.

The shelter is now open Monday through Friday from 8:30am- 5pm, Saturday 8:30am- 4pm, and Sunday from 12pm- 4pm.
