1980: Freighter rams into Sunshine Skyway Bridge; drivers plunge to their death
On May 9, 1980, a 600-foot freighter named the Summit Venture became engulfed in a violent storm, veered out of the channel and knocked down a section of the old Sunshine Skyway Bridge's southbound span, sending 35 people to their deaths. The new Skyway was designed to prevent this type of accident from happening again.
