If unsightly spider and varicose veins are keeping you from wearing your favorite summer dresses and shorts, a procedure being done by one Northshore doctor is helping some women erase their veins for good.
Its called Vein Erase, and its a combination treatment of Schlerotherapy (injecting a solution into the vein using a small, thin needle) immediately followed by the YAG Laser to help remove that purple and red caused by heredity, or standing on our feet too much.
Dr. Kelly Burkenstock says while saline has been used for years to inject the veins, she believes some of the newer solutions now on the market can be much more effective in getting rid of the vein. Dr. Burkenstock says its important though to custom treat each vein, depending on its size, shape, depth, and type.
After the Vein Erase Treatment, patients are asked to wear support hose for 48-72 hours. For the first week following the procedure, you should refrain from hot baths and showers, strenuous exercise, and dancing, and you need to avoid wearing those high heels! The treatment costs $325 (includes injections and laser), and patients can need anywhere from 1 to 4 treatments, depending on the severity of their veins. Patient Holly Mollere, who had the combination treatment done in our story, says the injections were not painful, and the laser part of the treatment felt like a small rubber band snap, and was only slightly uncomfortable.
Dr. Burkenstock says if you have thick, raised, cord-like varicose veins, the Vein Erase treatment may not work for you, and surgery may still be needed. Only your doctor can determine the best course of treatment for your varicose or spider veins.
