When it comes to at-home permanent hair reduction, two new over-the-counter devices are taking the beauty world by storm.
The first is called the Tria, it’s a laser hair removal device that doctors say works just like the in-office laser treatments, but doesn’t use as much heat or energy. The company just launched its new and improved version, which is touted as being more user-friendly. The Tria can be used on the legs, under arms, and arms, and requires 12 treatments (twice a month for 6 months is recommended) for permanent hair reduction. Our tester said the treatment doesn’t hurt, and she described it as a little pin feeling. The Tria retails for $395. www.Triabeauty.com to purchase the device, and for more information.
The second device is called Silk’n SensEpil, which uses Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, to safely remove hair permanently. The SensEpil has a large, 6 cm treatment head, it costs $499, and should be used twice a month for the first 2 months, and once a month for four months after. The SensEpil can be used on the body and the face. Our tester said the treatment did not hurt at all, and just felt like a little heat on the skin. www.silkn.com for more information, and to purchase the device.
Dermatologist Dr. Sarah Jackson says both devices are safe and have the science behind them to show they work. Both devices have automatic sensors to detect if the skin is too dark for use. Neither device can be used on dark skin. The devices will target melanin, so that is why dark hair benefits the most because it has the most color to absorb the heat to impair the hair follicle. Those with dark skin tones can’t use the devices because the melanin in the skin can also become attacked, resulting in blistering, burns, or scars. Patients with dark skin tones are candidates for permanent hair removal at the doctor’s office, since doctors can use a stronger, deeper wavelength of light which won’t harm the surface of dark skin. Blonde or grey hair can not be treated (same case in a doctor’s office…the technology just isn’t there yet!), and both devices will not work if not in full contact with the skin. Dr. Jackson says you don’t have to worry about residual light you may see from the laser or IPL devices, and eye goggles do not need to be worn.
So why are multiple treatments needed for any kind of hair removal, included devices found at a doctor’s office? Our hair grows in different stages: growing, resting and shedding. Because all of the hair isn't on the same stage at any given time, multiple treatments are needed to get the hair in the growth phase, for it to be most effective. Dr. Jackson says while the devices are effective, you will typically see even better results within office devices at the doctor’s office.
