It was voted one of the year's biggest beauty breakthroughs by Allure Magazine, and it's finally made its way from Australia to the United States.
The device is called Microskin, a simulated second skin which is formulated for each person's skin to color correct and cover up skin conditions like vitiligo, birth marks, and severe rosacea. Microskin can also be used to cover tattoos, vericose veins, burn scars, broken blood vessels, and acne scars.
The all-natural, waterproof formula can be airbrushed or applied using a blotting method, and it can stay on the face or body anywhere from a few days to a week.
Local dermatologist Dr. Patricia Farris, who considers Microskin to be a major breakthrough in the cover-up arena, says the staying power of Microskin is what makes the product so revolutionary, along with its ability to precisely match the patient's skin color.
Patients get scanned by a computerized system that actually uses the skin problem as part of the solution.
Dr. Farris says another benefit is that Microskin, when applied correctly, won't appear cakey or heavy.
Before bringing the device home, patients must be scanned and taught to use it at a Microskin Center, which today, is only located in New York City. The company is expected to expand its centers to other cities around the country.
So what's the next best thing when it comes to covering up serious skin problems? Dr. Farris says one of her favorites available over the counter is CoverBlend. It's not waterproof and doesn't have the staying power of Microskin, but she says the product comes in a number of colors and shades to match most skin tones, and does a good job of covering up imperfections.
