Some doctors are calling it a beauty breakthrough in fat removal technology, and it's just made its way to the Metro Area. It's called CoolSculpting by Zeltiq, and it's a technique that doctors say actually kills the fat cells, by freezing them to death.
The breakthrough in this technology, according to Dr. Patrick Coleman, is that it can remove fat without any incisions, and little to no pain or downtime. Patients say once the device head is applied to the skin, it feels somewhat like the suction from a vacuum cleaner, except it can get very cold, and you can expect some redness at the site for several hours, even days, after the procedure, and possibly some minor bruising and soreness.
Dr. Coleman says CoolSculpting does not damage the skin, only the fat cells, but he says it also will not help with any tightening of the skin either. He says CoolSculpting is best for single areas or spot areas of fat, and that liposuction is still the best choice for patients looking to get rid of larger areas of fat.
The procedure runs about $1,500 per area, and 2 to 3 treatments are usually recommended for the best results. CoolSculpting takes about an hour, and the device will stay attached on the skin (without assistance from the doctor or patient), allowing the patient to read a book or even sleep during the procedure.
