It started out as an idea in 1953 by a group of concerned parents. Originally
known as the Association for Retarded Children, a small, but extremely
determined gathering of parents organized and implemented an action plan as a
means of helping each other and their children affected by mental retardation
and related developmental disabilities. Slowly, limited education services were
initiated with the determination of parents-volunteers leading the
efforts.
